What is Jal Neti?

Jal Neti, derived from the Sanskrit words “Jal” (water) and “Neti” (nasal cleansing), is a simple yet powerful technique to cleanse the nasal passages. As part of the Shatkarma, the six purification techniques in Hatha Yoga, Jal Neti prepares the body for the higher practices of pranayama and meditation.

At Vyas Yoga School, we guide you through this practice using a special pot called a Neti pot, filled with lukewarm saline water.

This traditional method involves the gentle flushing of the nasal passages with saline water, promoting physical health and spiritual well-being. Rooted in Ayurvedic medicine and yoga, Jal Neti is renowned for its ability to enhance respiratory health, mental clarity, and spiritual growth.

How to do it?

How to do it

Preparation:

  • Fill the Neti pot with lukewarm water and add a pinch of non-iodized salt. The concentration of salt should be similar to that of your tears, about 0.9% saline, to avoid irritation.

Execution:

  • Stand over a sink and tilt your head to one side.
  • Insert the spout of the Neti pot into the upper nostril, creating a seal.
  • Breathe through your mouth and allow the water to flow through the nasal passage and exit through the lower nostril.
  • Repeat the process on the other side.

Completion:

  • Gently blow your nose to clear out any remaining water and mucus.
  • Perform Kapalabhati (skull shining breath) to dry out the nasal passages completely.
